What are National Parks and Reserves?

Often a National Park is a reserve of natural, semi-natural land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of ‘wild nature’ for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. And Israel, such small country, has loads of National Parks and Reserves. Each park represents a particular type of natural land (for example forests, deserts, mountains, valleys, lakes, swamps, flowers, etc.). We at Shalom Israel, can visit with our tours 26 different National Parks and Reserves in Israel, but there are more National Parks in Israel, which are not included in this type of tours.

What type of National Parks and Reserves can we visit?

  1. Agricultural regions with abundant fresh water and major stopover for birds migrating along the Syrian-African Rift Valley between Africa, Europe, and Asia
  2. Ancient, overgrown cities
  3. Archaeological sites and desert
  4. Biblical gardens and nature preserves
  5. Caves and sinkholes
  6. Deserts
  7. Diverse historical and architectural legacies includes Hellenistic, Jewish, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader, Arabic and Ottoman influences
  8. Fortresses and castles, ancient fortifications, ruins
  9. Geologic formation in Israel with grottoes
  10. Mountains with high cliffs, monasteries and old Christian locations
  11. Oasis in the desert
  12. Prehistoric human beings
  13. Springs, streams, waterfalls
  14. Swamps with pelicans, cranes, pygmy cormorants, gray herons, moorhens, European coots, and black-winged stilts
  15. Unique variety of flora and fauna together with monasteries, old Christian locations and Synagogues
  16. Wilderness and grottoes inhabited by Nabateans and Catholic monks with springs and canyons

Who can join a group for the National Parks and Reserves?

In principle the whole family, but we would not advice children under the six. It’s possible, but the parents will be additionally stressed because the child is too young to show patience.
